What festivals do people recommend- that would accept VHS or SVHS. I shot on mini DV but the edit suite is a Matrox and can only put out onto VHS/SVHS should I try and get it onto BETA SP or back onto DV- or just wait until I make my next film and can afford a better edit suite. Has anyone entered any of these festivals and how have your films done
cheers

hi kathy i advise strongly against vhs or vhs-c as it is deemed unprofessional.
if you use a rt2000 then you should be able to go back to dv (if your camera has a widget that is ). Other than that get it onto beta sp as they will always accept it.
the benefits are for you the loss in quality when it is put through onto vhs is substantial.
And by the way do you know anyone who wants or ever thought of joining with a few members to make films?

Get your movie onto BetaSP, definately. A lot of respected festivals treat a BetaSP tape with the same respect as they do a film print.
I would hook up with a few people on the board, but all you fuckers like in the UK!

fests can call for submissions on VHS, then you must tick a box on the form somewhere that says what formats it is available in.
they review the stuff on VHS in the first instance, then if it's good for the fest they will want the higher quality format.
that's my experience anyway
check the submission details

My camera has DV in and out- it's just the edit suite is old and doesn't have it- or do you mean I still could put it onto mini DV through a SVHS output. Sending to first festival at the mo. Cheers for advice- would join with other filmmakers- infact I did but that didn't exactly work out- still the film got made, and I'd be willing to joing up with other filmmakers.
Kathy
PS- if anyone wants to enter the Hull Film Festival let me know, I vagely know the organiser and it's the festivals first year. And they will accept any format- apparently!

most fests seem to ask for a VHS viewing copy, to decide if they want to show it.
But I havent seen many that will accept a final copy quality *below* betaSP.
So if you can put a copy onto a BetaSP tape then you will have more options.
Seems a shame to have made the thing, and then fall at this hurdle. Can you not borrow a editor that can upload your DV and export to BetaSP?
If the film is edited it needn't take long to do?
Good luck

Kathy, you're gonna have to find a way to take your digital cut to a video editing house with BetaSP post equiptment.

The cost of sticking a firewire card in your computer is so cheap nowadays that this is the route i would take. dv into computer ,edit via premiere, output back into camera then make vhs copy for initial submission then if they want it go and get the dv to beta transfer. They may even want it kept on dv because remember the quality aint gonna improve on beta sp cause it,s just a copy and also it's analogue!
